May the Fuz Rise with you
8 September 2004

Hello Friends.

We are surrounded by diapers today. Rescue us!

Clown diapers are in and moving fast. This is our Last Hemp Hurrah, which Marc says must rhyme with "The Last Emperor."

A different color on every layer of the diaper leaves six colors per diaper, with a few repeats on the soaker wings. These are eye-dazzling diapers.

You must call to order these diapers.
$24 each for 1-4 diapers, or $23 each for 5 or more

The costs of materials and labor has raised the price a bit over our regular Firefly Quick Dry Color diaper price.

Why are we phasing out hemp/cotton when so many people like the function of the fabric? Good question.

We have been balancing several priorities for a while: function, origins (including labor), and production. As long as only hemp/cotton functioned at the highest levels, we maintained all of our products in both hemp/cotton and organic cotton. We were uneasy about importing fabric from China, though. I don't want to import fabric. I especially don't want to do this as so many of the mills that supplied nice fabrics to us in the past closed their U.S. plants within the past couple of years and moved to China. I see the effects of this all around me in unemployment.

What about China? I don't know enough about the specifics of production of the hemp/cotton we used, despite years of asking. The best answer I received was that the hemp/cotton was produced in a "campus-like setting." Sounds lovely. I wonder what it means.

Once I found a U.S. producer who could make a thicker, more absorbent organic cotton fleece for me, the choice was clear. Organic cotton all of the way.

Hemp is much easier on the environment than cotton, but industrial hemp is not grown in the U.S. (Please read our hemp page if you would like to know why this might be: http://www.fuzbaby.com/hemp.htm#hemprant) But, the social costs are our higher priority at this time. Like most of you, we are improvising the best solutions based on our current information.

If you would like to see and feel swatches of our new organic cotton, you may order them here: http://www.fuzbaby.com/organic.htm The cost is $1.00 alone or $.50 to add this to an order.

Auction, auction. The dye experiments didn't go too well on the auction we had in mind for June. Then, the vegetable was just out of season. Then. . . you get the picture. We do have an all-new Diaper Garden set waiting in line for production (after the contour diapers that are currently in production). So, you can expect a new Fall-ish vegetable some time in the near (though not immediate) future.

Now? It's the end of the season for wild berries here. Our children picked wild blackberries (thimble berries) last week, and that was definitely the end of soft berry season. To say goodbye, we have posted all remaining Strawberry items on auction at eBay. You may see all of our auctions: click here, or search for seller name fuzbaby at eBay: http://www.ebay.com/

Do you remember the cushy, soft Strawberries and Cream Firefly Quick Dry Diapers we offered last year? You will find 9 Small diapers in two groups (dutch auctions); 3 Large diapers (dutch auction). There are also 3 wool covers, and a T-shirt & socks set. Red is a great, fertile harvest color.

The auctions end Friday midday.

As always, we have many other items currently in stock:

  • hemp diaper bags with batik lining
  • diaper pail liners and wet tote bags
  • Firefly Sleep Tight diapers
  • many regular Large hemp/cotton Firefly Quick Dry Color diapers

Look over our website, or give us a call to find out the details on items not on our website.
