Fuzbaby Gallery: Magpie Greeting Cards
February 2006
Together with a group of women who produce some of the most elaborately decorated cloth diaper and cloth sets available, I joined Random Eclipse. The auctions are occasional and somewhat unpredictable, like a random eclipse.

Magpie Greeting Cards
For each Random Eclipse, the members are suggested with a theme. This time, we were asked to create something outside our usual medium --- mine being diaper art.
Since we had only moved recently to Utah, I had been noticing many --- I mean MANY MANY --- magpies flying in every town, over every road, out my window every day. I had magpies on my mind.

Fuzbaby, as a matter of fact, had sold a magpie mobile a long time ago.
I had been interested in magpies for a while. I was intrigued by the fact that these birds gather any kind of colorful scraps to make their nests.
I was surrounded by colorful scraps.
I made a wool magpie (sort of visible near the top of the image at right) who held a brass ring looped with scraps from our old Refuz diapers.

For this Random Eclipse, I took the idea of magpies, some strong colors of paper, several textures of black paper, a pile of tiny wool scraps, and I sewed up a mess of greeting cards.
The group photo was taken near my house, where there are a lot of magpies.
I wonder whether the magpies saw us taking the photos of these mysteriously flat magpies? |
