Fuzbaby Gallery: First Bound Diapers
Early 2000
I've never made a secret of the fact that I put binding on diapers because my serging wasn't that great. Granted, my standards are high. I like the finished look, too.
The drawback to binding is the bulk it creates around the leg. I've finally solved that by putting the elastic inside the binding in current Fuzbaby diapers, but for the first six years, the fitted diapers had a heavy binding around the legs. It wasn't really so bad--just a bother.
From the beginning, I wanted a full range of sizes from Preemie to Extra Large. When a friend had a 2.5lb baby, I was in charge of finding cloth diapers. There were none. I ended up getting wash clothes for them, which worked perfectly well. I determined, though, that I would always have preemie sizes available if needed.

This is the image I first shared when asked, What exactly do your diapers look like. It is not easy for a perfectionist to show early work.

Fuzbaby hemp/cotton fitted diaper:
inside edge
Originally, I put the fuzzy side of the fabric next to the baby. I preferred it this way, but a lot of the testers wanted the fabric smooth-side to baby. So, the fuzz is now inside.

snap-in doubler
The original doublers snapped into the diaper. While this is good news for not losing the doubler in the wash, it is bad news for wear. The doublers are no longer attached. Now they are mix-and-match, even optional.

front panel
In order to accomplish my incredibly complicated elastic leg process, I had to finish the front of the diaper after the rest. I later solved this production problem. Now the front panel is rounded and the binding is applied in one piece.
