Fuzbaby Gallery: Elemental: Fitted Diapers
October 2005
Elemental Fitted Cloth Diapers follow broad colorways for Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Sky. Our original hand-printed, hand-painted organic cotton knit plays on these elemental themes, while a colorful variety of hand-dyed colors make up the inside, trim, and doublers of the diapers.Read the story and buy Elemental Diapers.
See also Galleries for Refuz recycled cotton diapers in each colorway. This former favorite inspired the Elemental Diapers.

Elemental Air
I wanted this design to have motion. We tried various messy ways of showing motion through dye, but in the end I quite liked having one of the Elemental fabric designs be tighter and more distinct to balance out the looseness of, for example, Water.

Elemental Fire
After accordion fanning before painting, squishing, folding, bunching and various other methods of gathering and painting, fire always turned out looking like red water. Marc saved the day by creating this print block. Looking at it closely, it seems like an animal paw giving someone the finger. I'll keep telling him it looks like flames.

Elemental Water
A long-ago and unfortunately not forgotten failed Diaper Garden included a water print on burley knit terry. It looked FABULOUS. The burley knit terry, however, was such a monster that I tossed it all in a pile and refused to touch it again. I dumped cotton and wool all. Still, I liked the way the colors flowed together to create a watery pattern so I revived the technique.

Elemental Earth
I revisited several of my favorite fabric dye/print patterns for the Elementals. Earth, it seems to me, wants to be a mix of rich, fertile colors. There are about a dozen greens and browns in this mix, in different proportions on different areas of the fabric so every diaper has a bit different color feel.

Elemental Sky
I have several diaper themes I continue to revisit, whether I make the print myself or buy it. I love cloudy skies and watermelons most of all. When the other elements vary around the center, I like that Sky remains consistently sky.
