Fuzbaby Gallery: Polar Bear Coat
February 2008
Together with a group of women who produce some of the most elaborately decorated cloth diaper and cloth sets available -- as well as some other great additions, I joined Random Eclipse. The auctions are occasional and somewhat unpredictable, like a random eclipse.

Polar Bear Coat
For each Random Eclipse, the members are suggested with a theme. Timed to coincide with the full eclipse of the moon was the theme "Hidden Things."
Hiding in this polar white coat are the northern lights (as batik cotton lining) and a little mother polar bear with her baby, ready to leave their fur-lined pocket to find fish. They will need to look in the hidden pocket in the lining.

Polar Bears
I've been thinking a lot about polar bears lately, wondering if my grandchildren will have more than photos. I sat with my children and watched Planet Earth. One mother bear frolicked with her cubs, but another bear couldn't find food so it curled up to die. I just can't shake the polar bears.
When presented with the theme of hidden things for Random Eclipse, I wondered if the bears themselves might be hidden from our future.

Fish!
The bears are looking for food. I couldn't stand to make a walrus after seeing Planet Earth, so I made a simple fish.
This is really easy to make. I stacked several fishy colors of wool knit between two layers of wool felt, cut a generally fishy shape, and sewed a fish outline with lines for fins. The bears have some circles inside to give them a bit of extra bearlike roundness.
This is a really quick way to make simple shaped toys for your child -- a child old enough that they won't try to swallow the fish, of course. |
